Ryan Cabrera returns to Smith's Olde Bar's stage Wednesday, October 12 for an intimate performance. It's been awhile since Cabrera played the popular Atlanta music venue and it'll definitely be night of talented musicians with the likes of Jimi Cravity and Jerad Finck also on the bill. Cabrera will be playing familiar favorites as well as new music off of his upcoming album. Mixtape Atlanta recently chatted with Cabrera on his upcoming show, new music, and what he will be wearing this Halloween.
Ryan, your upcoming show at Smith's will be acoustic. Do you prefer performing with a full band or the intimacy of a solo act? What are some of the challenges and advantages of both scenarios?
I like both honestly for different reasons. The full band is obviously fun and in your face and crazy energy, while the acoustic show is unique and more intimate. It gives me a chance to interact more with people and tell stories. It's just a cool vibe.
Like many artists today, you are pretty active on Twitter. How important do you think it is to interact with fans via social media? Do you ever think or worry that fans know too much?
Well growing up on a TV show didn't help privacy issues too much- haha. I think though as a musician you kind of have to put yourself out there in lyric and tell your stories. All of my songs are about real scenarios and you need that in hopes that people can connect and hopefully it helps them in their life somehow.
You are working on a new album, how is that coming along? Expected release date yet?
So far it's my favorite stuff I've written. It's cool to write after you've had more experiences. The sound is more acoustic and upbeat than the last one. There's a few ballads too, but mainly up-tempo. Sometime next year we will put it out.
With Halloween coming up, what was your favorite Halloween costume you ever dressed up as? Any fun costume ideas for this year?
I think my favorite costume so far was either Sweeny Todd or Andy Warhol. This year I'm going to have a party, so I better think of something quick! Maybe Ron Burgundy.
If you were making your ultimate mixtape of your favorite songs, which track would you have to include?
"Cannonball" by Damien Rice
"Don't Go Away" by Oasis
"Beast of Burden" by The Rolling Stones
