The Bacon Brothers at City Winery

Tonight, The Bacon Brothers are stopping by Atlanta for two shows at City Winery as one of three final city stops on their month long tour. Although they've been performing together since they were kids, Michael and Kevin officially formed The Bacon Brothers band in 1995. For over twenty years, they have toured across the country and released seven albums all while maintaining extremely successful and respected careers in film composing (Michael) as well as acting, directing, and producing (Kevin).

Creativity runs deep in this family, which is also found in the band's unique blend of several musical genres. The Bacon Brothers' songs are rooted in rock and soul with laces of country and blues weaved throughout.

This summer, The Bacon Brothers released their new single "Driver" written and sung by Kevin. As one might except from the title, the relaxed summer jam is a great addition to any road or boat trip playlist. With an Americana traveling beat and Mellencamp twang, the song is an enticing tease of songs to come from their next album. Watch the music video for "Driver," here.

ATLFF 2015: I AM MICHAEL

The 2015 Atlanta Film Festival opened its 39th annual event with one of the most buzzed about indie films of the year, I Am Michael. Although the film’s star James Franco was not in attendance as scheduled, his producing partner Vince Jolivette participated in a Q&A following the screening and Franco friend, actress Abigail Spencer introduced the movie before a sold-out house at The Plaza Theatre.

I Am Michael tells the complicated true story of Michael Glatze, an outspoken homosexual, gay rights advocate who ultimately renounces that identity to become a heterosexual married, Christian pastor. Franco tackles the complex role of Glatze in one of his most layered yet understated performances to date. Zachary Quinto and Emma Roberts play his two partners throughout the different stages of Glatze’s journey; Quinto as his supportive, kind-hearted lover and Roberts as his naïve, optimistic wife. The performances throughout the film are impressive, engaging, and carry the weight of the movie.

Glatze’s real-life identity crisis casts a split personality within Michael that teeters between flat and fascinating. One of the film’s many strengths is that it lets the events of Glatze’s life unfold without an overly forced agenda; however, it’s the same lack of a motive that drains energy from potentially high-charged moments. Although it is nice that first-time director Justin Kelly allows scenes to breathe and not rush, there is not enough material or context to really build upon for a more intense impact.

Jolivette confirmed that Michael’s message is open to interruption, which is also an issue in trying to find an audience target especially due to the final scene. The ending is chilling or affirming depending on one’s personal convictions and will spark many conversations; it’s those post-viewing discussions which might be the film’s greatest impact.

2015 Atlanta Film Festival

March 20-29 marks the return of the annual Atlanta Film Festival. This year's festival is comprised with some of the most diverse, exciting, edgy, and hyped films during the ten day festival run.

Friday night, the Atlanta Film Festival will officially kick off at The Plaza Theatre with a special presentation screening of I Am Michael. Starring James Franco and Zachary Quinto, the film follows the true story of a man in a committed gay relationship who ultimately renounces his homosexuality to become a Christian pastor and marry a woman. The film's star James Franco and producer Vince Jolivette are scheduled to attend.

Although one can't go wrong in supporting the various independent film selections showcased at AFF this year, below are some of our top picks.

Big Charity: The Death of America's Oldest Hospital- Documentary about New Orleans' Charity Hospital, it's rich 300 year old history, and the crisis of public health care.

Dante's Down the Hatch- Documentary about the famed nautical Atlanta landmark, it's owner, and impact on the city.

I'll See You In My Dreams- Starring Blythe Danner and Sam Elliott, the drama charts one woman's coming of age journey in the third-act of her life.

Love and Mercy- Paul Dano and John Cusack both portray Brian Wilson, the musical mastermind beyond The Beach Boys' greatest hits, in this dramatic bio-pic.

Tony D. Price: Art Show & Benefit

Come out and support Atlanta artist Tony D. Price. Not only is Tony a fixture in the Atlanta art scene, but he is everyone's biggest fan. You can always see him out at events and music shows supporting his friends and now it's our chance to cheer for him.

Tony was recently hospitalized due to a staph infection on his spine which resulted in an evasive back operation temporarily leaving him without motor skills from the waist down. Always a fighter, Tony is in aggressive rehab to regain his skills and learn to walk again.

Join us on February 7 at Smith's Olde Bar as we raise funds and spirits for Tony's speedy (but pricey) recovery. We will have Tony's artwork for sale, raffle prizes, and all money from the night goes directly to help one of our favorite people. So come out for a night of fun, art, and to toast the one and only Tony D. Price. Suggested cover price is $5.

The 411 on X-Mix 2014

Mixtape Atlanta presents their sixth annual X-Mix concert party benefiting Songs for Kids Foundation. This year's theme is taking it to the dance floor with a lineup full of 80s and original pop bands. Atlanta's Best 80s Synth Pop band, Electric Avenue, is headlining the night with support from The Love Willows, an infectious pop band from Nashville, and Goldwing, local original rockers with a pop swing. Atlanta 80s aerobics act, Aerobics Cube, will also be keeping the crowd warmed up and footloose between sets. Music icon James Hall is going to be in attendance too for the sixth straight year with a very special performance. 

Doors open at 8pm and Whynatte is starting the night off right with their annual toast and free shots to first 100 people at 8:30pm sharp! Mixtape Atlanta will also have an 80s theme photo booth snapping from 8-10pm.

21 YEARS: RICHARD LINKLATER ATL Premiere

On November 7, Gasoline Films will release their second feature documentary, 21 Years: Richard Linklater. The film is their first follow up to last year's favorite The Man Who Ate New Orleans.

21 Years charts the origins and impact of esteemed filmmaker Richard Linklater through interviews by some of Linklater's most notable stars and friends, including Matthew McConaughey, Ethan Hawke, Billy Bob Thornton, Keanu Reeves, and more. From his resourceful indie roots to storytelling innovation, Linklater has entertained and intrigued movie fans for years and this documentary offers an interesting new chapter.

Check out 21 Years: Richard Linklater in theaters and On Demand starting November 7. For Atlantans, don't miss the opportunity to attend the Atlanta premiere and red carpet screening on Saturday, November 8 at The Plaza Theatre; tickets are available at Plaza's box office. Admission to film screening also includes access to the after-party at Wild Haven Brewery.

Day of the Dead Post-Mortem

On November 1, Blair Crimmins and The Hookers invaded Terminal West for a party fit for the living and the dead. The local ragtime players were joined by Indianapolis Jones and hundreds of fans embracing their inner skeletons. There was even a competitive costume contest ranging from worst to best.

Day of the Dead Party

This Halloween there is a great excuse to wear your costume TWICE. Recycle your costume from Friday or rock a new one at Day of the Dead: Halloween Part 2 party and concert on Saturday, November 1 at Terminal West. Blair Crimmins and The Hookers are headlining this extravaganza with Indianapolis Jones opening.

Doors open at 8pm and Mixtape Atlanta will be armed with cameras to snap your photo in a free themed photo booth. Music starts at 9pm. Costume contest prizes will also be given out for Best, Worst, Best Lookalike, Most Creative, Most Inappropriate, and Best Day of the Dead. Ticket are onsale now, so what are you waiting for! Shakespeare at Smith's Olde Bar

This Saturday, local sketch comedy troupe Shakespeare Follies is storming the stage at Smith's Olde Bar for their annual "Best in Show" show. The evening will feature comedy interludes from the Follies gang as well as 15 variety guest performers from across the Southeast. The guest performers- all ranging from comediennes, musicians, to circus freaks- will vie for your love and votes. The performer with the most audience votes will win $250 cash prize and headline Shakespeare Follies fall show.

It's Happening...#ATLast

The original ATLiens are returning to the heart of Atlanta on September 27. Outkast, who've been on a rapid festival performance schedule since April, will play a special hometown show on September 27 in Centennial Olympic Park.

The concert will be produced by Rival Entertainment and The Bowery Presents South and additional special guest performers are scheduled to be announced in the near future. Tickets go on sale this Wednesday June 18 via Ticketmaster. There are currently three different ticket options ranging from General Admission to Front Stage VIP.

What’s better than a music festival with some of the most amazing bands on the planet? A music festival with some of the most amazing bands on the planet - ON A BEACH. Hangout Music Fest turned 5 this year, and we got front row, toes in the sand access to this raucous routine.

Bronze Radio Return rocking out on the BMI stage

From morning until night, multiple stages set in Gulf Shores, Alabama entertain the masses. Bathing suits and sand, drinks and friends, and music all around created the perfect concoction of party and vacation in one. Giant beach balls, inflatable rafts, and festivalgoers were bouncing everywhere in sight. Some of the musical highlights included amazing performances by Outkast (!), The Black Keys, Tegan and Sara, Childish Gambino, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Bronze Radio Return, Blackberry Smoke, Bastille, Fitz and the Tantrums, The 1975, Matt and Kim, and an insane kickoff dance party with Skrillex.

If you should decide to patronize this fest, make sure you come prepared. Long days in the sun do not mix with dehydration. Make sure you bring your water bottle, extra sunscreen, and a buddy. Schedule a frequent rub down, and enjoy the fact that you are, indeed, not a lobster. Plus, you absolutely have to make it through to the all the headliners’ sets.

All in all, this experience is truly unique. With nearby awesome accommodations for thosetravelling, a shuttle system to combat exhausting walks, and a great party with thousands of friends. It just doesn’t get better than this. In the words of Capital Cities dancy-beachy cover, Hangout … “Nothing Compares 2 U.”

Shakespeare Follies! This Weeekend

Shakespeare Follies is returning to stage with a brand-new show themed around The Histories. Sound too much like high school? Don't fret. It's an evening of hilarious Bard-infused sketches, variety acts including magicians, dancers, and jugglers, and above all FUN! Think of it as Laugh-In (Shakespeare style).

Shakespeare Follies: The Histories is Saturday, May 17 in East Atlanta at The Arts Exchange. Doors open at 8pm and the show starts at 8:30pm. BYOB is encouraged.

X-Mix 2013 Wrap-Up

 

 

 

 

For Mixtape Atlanta's annual X-Mix held on Friday, December 13 at Vinyl, the venue was transformed into a vision of merry and scary to reflect this year's theme of The Nightmare Before X-Mix.

Whynatte kicked off the party with a toast and round of shots for all those 21 and over, and Yosef was first to take the stage in a line-up that included Mel Washington, Wesley Cook, Aerobics Cube, The Electric Sons, and a rock filled finale by James Hall. Yacht Rock Revue also stopped by to perform a few songs. While dancing and music was had onstage, revelry and- probably too many Whynatte shots- overtook the crowd, including notable guests Butch Walker and members from Skid Row.

All proceeds from the night benefited Songs for Kids Foundation, and HUGE holiday hugs to all that donated in addition to the door cover.

Roll with The District Attorneys

Atlanta's The District Attorneys are kicking 2014 off with one of the best albums of 1995 for what is sure to be a wonderwall of fun and music. The local rockers will be performing a tribute to Oasis' (What's The Story) Morning Glory? plus the album's B-Sides on Friday, January 3 at Smith's Olde Bar. The rowdy night starts at 8PM with Party Dolls opening the electric lineup, so come early, stay late, and be prepared to party... some might say it is an event not to be missed.

Attention boys and ghouls, don't cry into your candy now that Halloween is over because the winter holidays are about to get a whole lot spookier!

This year Mixtape Atlanta is adding some scary to the merry for our fifth annual X-Mix holiday extravaganza and music showcase all benefiting Songs for Kids Foundation.

We are thriller-ed to present The Nightmare Before X-Mix on Friday, December 13th at Vinyl. The lineup will be released soon, but mark you calendar now and help us spread the word. Can't wait to see you all!

Rain, Revival, and Rock

Downpour showers and flood warnings couldn't stop Yacht Rock Revue and their list of special guests from sailing into Chastain Park Amphitheater for their annual revival on July 20. The band's trademark precision also translated to the skies, because when they took the stage a little after 8:30pm the rain stopped and the dance floor began to dry.

Yacht Rock Schooner got the party started under the veil of drizzle to serenade the brave poncho wearers and rain delayed crowd. Atlanta's own Starbuck reunited for a special performance and quick set before the classic Yacht Rock troop took the stage.

For nearly two hours, Yacht Rock Revue was joined by original yacht rockers including Bobby Kimball (lead singer of Toto), Bill Champlin formerly Of Chicago, Jeff Carlisi (.38 Special), Robbie Dupree, Elliot Lurie (Looking Glass), and Walter Egan. After hours of shuffling, dancing, duets, harmonies, and nonstop performing the night culminated in a showstopping finale of "Lido" featuring all generations of yacht rockers.
