DaveFM hosted a special edition of their Circle of Friends series with Mumford & Sons on Sunday, June 12 at the W Midtown. The band had played Bonnaroo the night before and had a sold out show at The Fox Theatre just a few hours after the special intimate performance for about 50 lucky fans.
As the band was tuning their gear, they joked with each other and the audience about being a bit “off” after their late night Bonnaroo antics. Mumford & Sons played 3 songs: “Awake My Soul”, “Roll Away Your Stone” (both off of their album Sigh No More), and a new song that they penned in Nashville during the Fall entitled “Lover’s Eyes”.
In between songs, Margot from DaveFM asked the guys some questions that listeners had submitted online throughout the week. One question asked was whom they would be most honored to hear cover one of their songs. The response from Marcus Mumford: “Blink 182. Next.” This unexpected answer was followed by the band breaking into a short cover of Blink 182's “All The Small Things”.
The guys also chatted about other projects they are working on individually, focusing on Ben Lovett’s Communion Project, which provides new musicians in the United Kingdom with an established platform. Margot's last question asked Mumford & Sons about how their music transforms between the writing process and when a song is performed live. The band seemed to agree that being able to perform is what makes them strive to write great songs, and that performing a song makes it feel real. The two go hand in hand for the band, and a lot of their writing is done when on tour, as they will play unfinished songs to the crowd and build it from those experiences.
After this tour, Mumford & Sons will return to London for four months to record a new album. We can only hope that soon after that they will tour the states again and make a stop in Atlanta!

Now, for my personal take on things: "OMG OMG OMG!" When I first learned that I was going to cover this event for Mixtape Atlanta, I literally jumped around at work for about 30 minutes. I discovered Mumford & Sons nearly three years ago. The fact that this was only the second time the band had ever graced Atlanta with their presence, and they sold their show out in MINUTES if not seconds, is out of control. But yet they still seem humbled by their seemingly overnight success. Their personalities were really able to shine throughout at the 30 minute DaveFM event; the band was so relaxed joking and telling stories with fans. It seems like every time I see Mumford & Sons live, I fall in love all over again. The songs really come to life when they play, even in such a stripped down environment. Mumford & Sons' energy and love for what they do and create is apparent, even when suffering from post Bonnaroo lack of sleep/hangovers! -AU
