The marketing behind the new film Catfish, hitting theatres September 24, has been intriguing. With a tagline like “Don’t let anyone tell you what it is,” one would expect this documentary to be a freighting thriller. In reality, this documentary is a fascinating study into the world of online relationships and communications. Catfish is part love story and part mystery, but completely unsettling. Although the trailers would lead you to think that the film contains scary moments or that “the twist” is shocking, it contains neither. The viewer discovers the true reality of the situation at the same time the subject (Nev Schulman) and the filmmakers do. Since the story revolves so much around a new generation that uses the computer for everything, the filmmakers do a nice job of incorporating these everyday computer tools like Google Maps, Facebook, and Instant Messenger to help tell the story. More than anything the film enforces the same fact people have been voicing for years, how well do you really know someone if your only contact with them is through technology.
