Atlanta’s Family Force 5 has been dazzling crowds across the country with their energetic stage shows for years. From frequent appearances on Warped Tour to their recent concert at Center Stage, the band always shows their hometown Atlanta lots of love. Recently Derek Mount (aka ChapStique) chatted with Mixtape Atlanta about the band’s favorite local hot spots, their own krunked-out carols, and their new album, Christmas Pageant.
Since you guys are Atlanta locals, what do you like to do when you’re in town- besides hanging out with family and friends?
I am a huge fan of
Eclipse di Luna in Miami Circle. I love the Virginia Highlands area- I used to live there so I love their local spots. One of my favorites is
Daddy D’z BBQ; it’s the most life-changing place in the world. If you’re feeling down on your luck and need a pick-me-up, go get some chicken and ribs at Daddy D’z. That was all food! It sounds like all I care about is food! I like the Falcons and Bulldogs a lot, so if I ever get to go to a game that’s just glorious!
You guys are on your Christmas Pageant Tour right now. What is one place that you haven’t done a show yet, that you would love to go to, and why?
Japan! All of us really want to go there. It’s so funny how many kids and people from Japan hit us up on
Facebook and
MySpace. I guess our music has a bit of a dance vibe so I guess that just appeals to them. It would be a really cool place to explore and imagine the
Karate Kid and there were some cool boxing matches there back in the day with Mike Tyson, so we’d all love to go.
What’s your favorite part of making music for a living?
Watching people connect with it. There is just something magical when you see someone sing a lyric that you remember writing and they’re just in a moment of joy. Whatever crap they’ve got going on to know that Family Force 5 can be an escape from that is awesome.
Family Force 5 doing a Christmas album is unexpected. What made you decide to do this project and whose idea was it?
It was not the band’s idea I’ll tell you that! Everyone kept telling us to do it. All the fans wanted more music and we knew it might be a while before the next major record came out. We thought maybe this would be a good way to satisfy people’s cravings. Everyone was craving yuletide candy canes so we thought hey, well we’ll give you pecan candy rolls instead cause they’re better! We had to be pulled by the legs to get to do it though, because we thought we weren’t the Christmas album kind of band, but once we got the ball rolling with “Carol of the Bells” we knew we could do it.
How did you choose the songs you wanted to do on the album?
It was a long process. We all came to the table with what we liked- everyone made a list and checked it twice. I really wanted to do “O Holy Night,” but there is no way to compete with Bing Crosby so we decided to do ones that were a little funky. Soul Glow wanted to do “My Favorite Things,” which we thought was debatable because it’s not really a Christmas song; we told him that it’s from the sound of music. He said that it talks about snowflakes on eyelashes and whiskers on kittens and we were like man that’s gangster! Besides it’s on Barbra Streisand’s Christmas album!
I’m guessing the process for this album was different to any other album you have done. What was the best part of doing this project?
The best part is playing it live on the
Christmas Pageant Tour. It’s hilarious! We have snow machines and an amazing light show; we dress up like these old time Charles Dickens characters. There’s an abominable snowman that dances on stage with us, we’ve got little baby dolls for the baby Jesus. Its amazing- it’s a real pageant. It’s kind of like our version of what the Styx did with, “Kilroy Was Here”, they turned it into a rock opera- this is our rock opera! We throw packages tied up with string into the crowd. We wrap up hilarious stuff and people get really excited. Like the other day, SoulGlow stole Nadaddy’s DVD of
Suburban Commando with Hulk Hogan and wrapped it up in a package and threw it out in the crowd. Nadaddy was angry.
In one word describe the album.
Can I do a hyphened word? Bells-on-bobtails.
What’s your favorite song on the album?
“It’s Christmas Day”. There is something very nostalgic and personal about that song. I don’t know; it’s just really refreshing. We were very nervous to write a pretty song, I guess “How in the World” was a song off our second album
Dance or Die, that was our first pretty slow and ballad-y song we’ve written and we didn’t know if we could pull it off again, but it was fun.
What’s the best Christmas gift you ever gave someone?
One year my dad was going through the worst time at work. His boss was being a complete jerk making him come in at 5 am and work till 2 am and docking everybody’s pay. He was just being a big pain in the booty. He was having a pretty bad Christmas. So my sister and I got a blow up doll of a guy and dressed him up as my dad’s boss and put a big bow on it. We played a clip from a movie that we got the idea from and my dad was cracking up. He started punching the doll and said that it was the most therapeutic gift he ever received.
Finish this sentence for me. “All I want for Christmas is…”
…for human trafficking to end.
Is there anything else you’d like your Atlanta fans to know about the album or the Christmas Pageant Tour?
Yeah, the tour has a different charity involved with each show like canned food drives and hospital charities and just some really cool opportunities to reach out to people, so even if you’re not coming to the show there is a way to donate. There is information on our MySpace so people can check it out.
If you could put any song on your ultimate mixtape, what would you choose?
“Everybody wants to rule the World” by Tears for Fears. I don’t know what it is about that song but if you’re driving at the beach or in the mountains, at night or in the morning, whatever the situation is, that song is so appropriate. Its just hilarious and catchy and the guitar rules. I think I’ve put it on every playlist I’ve ever made.
If you could put any song on a Christmas mixtape, what would you choose?
The song off the Muppets Christmas carol- “It Feels like Christmas.”
