No Doubt has not toured since 2004, but after seeing their June 5 concert at Lakewood Amphitheatre, it felt as if they never stopped. The iconic California pop group played all of their hits in a dynamic, high-energy show. Starting with one of their first major radio hits “Spiderwebs,” No Doubt continued to perform all of the most memorable highlights from their five-album catalogue.
Some music tours focused on “greatest hits” can feel dated or nostalgic, No Doubt managed to make their hits from the 1990s and early 2000s sound fresh and totally new. There was a timelessness and exciting vibe to the entire show. The stage was a futuristic white, while neon lights and 1960s mod inspired film vignettes played in the background. Gwen Stefani was effortless and energetic. The fearless lead singer hit every note and dance step, while still adding in different improvisational moments. Stefani pulled several fans onstage to interact with them, but did not loose the energy of the band or audience. As they ended their set with set with “Rock Steady” and “Sunday Morning,” there is no question that this band has the ability to remain one of pop/rock’s most successful acts as well as securing a bright future of many great songs ahead.
