Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanzaa, or all the above, this time of year provides for some great entertainment…and not just from tipsy coworkers at the office holiday party. At Mixtape Atlanta, we have compiled our top Wintertime movies and music that we rely on to get us in the holiday spirit.
Mixtape Atlanta’s Ultimate Holiday Mixtape and Movie Mix
Kim Burdges- I can't make a mixape of Christmas songs without Dean Martin's "Baby, It's Cold Outside." The song completely transports me to some swanky, stylish, 1960s Holiday soiree.
Christmas Vacation is my top movie pick this time of year, because it is a tradition in my family to watch it every Christmas Eve. Not only does the comedy never age, but it provides many laughs recalling our own crazy Christmases with family.
Jessica Lewis- One holiday song that I've always loved is "A Wonderful
Christmas Time" by Paul McCartney. It always puts me in the Christmas
spirit and brightens my mood whenever it comes on. As for a holiday
movie, I'd have to choose
Elf! Nothing makes me laugh more than Will
Ferrell dressed up in a small elf suit. This is not only my favorite
Christmas movie, but it probably tops the list of my top 5 all-time
favorite movies year round! I think I might drive people slightly
batty with my constant quoting from this movie. That's ok though
because "smiling is my favorite".
Jon Atchison– Elvis Presley’s “Blue Christmas” is a holiday staple that belongs on every Holiday themed mixtape; whether it’s Elvis’ smooth vocals or the swooning back up singers I can’t make it through the holidays without this song. Stepping out from conventional holiday movies;
Gremlins tops my list for great holiday fun; nothing says Christmas like chainsaw wielding mutant spawn rampaging a town (Pheobe Cates FTW!!).
Emily Boyd- It wouldn't be Christmas without Gayla Peevey's "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" or pretty much any song off
Dr. Demento Presents: Greatest Christmas Novelty CD. There is nothing like decorating the tree with your family to the tune of slightly twisted songs about the holiday season!
As for my Christmas film: it started out as an accidental tradition for a cableless family, but I won't let the holidays pass me by without watching
Coal Miner's Daughter. The story makes me feel good and every time I see or quote it, I'm right back at home in front of the TV sitting with my parents and sisters by the fire.
Michael Dunaway- Here's a surprise for you- Bob Dylan singing "O Little Town of Bethlehem." The most beautiful, poetic, and hopeful of Christmas songs pouring out in the ragged, revolutionary, dogged determination of Dylan's croaky voice. Latter-day Dylan vocals aren't pretty, but they are mesmerizing. As for Christmas films, surprisingly given my sentimental temperament, I've never been that into them, but I am crazy about
Love Actually; the best romantic comedy in the years between
When Harry Met Sally and
500 Days of Summer.
Lauren St. Jane- As a child I based all my belief in magic of Christmas on one movie,
Santa Clause: The Movie. In true 1980's fashion, John Lithgow and Dudley Moore answer every question I could ask as how Santa’s hard work and one night toy delivery all comes together. My mixtape must have Lee Ann Womack's, "The Season for Romance", a sweet New Year’s story of falling in love; it gets my heart every time!
Veronica Yung- As the air has a nice crisp chill to it and I sit next to a faux Christmas tree, I think about the meaning of Christmas: love, giving, and… violence?! Family Force 5’s version of “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer” helps me get into the groove of the Christmas spirit. To keep me in the holiday red-and-green spirit, I usually drink my hot white chocolate watching the Dr. Seuss book—either the TV special or film with Jim Carrey—
How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The Whos in Whoville’s Christmas spirit remind me that Christmas is more than receiving gifts, it’s also giving.
Happy Holidays from Mixtape Atlanta!
